Low-Impact Exercises For Back Pain Relief

Mar 9, 2018

Back pain can be extremely debilitating, even if you have not sustained a specific injury like a fracture or tear. Most forms of back pain are caused by an irritated or swollen muscle that is worn or stretched out. To address mild forms of recurring back pain, there are a few low-impact exercises patients can perform to manage their symptoms. Consider the following information provided by our Atlanta Orthopedic Doctors and if your pain persists, contact us to schedule an examination.

Exercise For Back Pain Relief

Cat Stretch

To perform this stretch, place yourself on the floor and position your body over your hands and knees. Keep your legs about two feet apart and relax each foot. Place your hands flat on the ground and keep your shoulders about two feet apart, as well. Start out by moving your navel in toward your back and arch your spine up toward the ceiling. Allow your neck to rest loosely between each shoulder. Once you are able to locate this position, try to maintain it for six seconds before returning to the original position. From here, you should arch your spine by moving your hips upward and letting your stomach lean toward the ground. Lift your back and neck up and down to finish the stretch. Repeat these movements several times before moving onto the next activity.

Bridges

Lie on the ground with your knees bent and your feet planted flat on the ground. Arch your hips up and form a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Maintain your feet and shoulder against the ground and hold this position for ten seconds. Once time is up, gradually move back to the original position and repeat several times, making sure that your abs and buttocks are contracted when you raise your hips.
