Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Traditional spine surgery, known as open surgery, is a more extensive surgery in which surgeons make a longer incision. Because it is more invasive this type of surgery requires a longer healing and recovery period. But some spinal surgeries can be performed arthroscopically through small incisions. This is known as minimally invasive spine surgery. The benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery are less pain after the procedure as well as a quicker and easier recovery process. It also minimizes the risks of spine surgery and avoids potential damage to surrounding muscles. Even though minimally invasive spine surgery is ideal over traditional open spine surgery, noninvasive treatment is always the first course of action before spinal surgeons will consider spine surgery. If nothing seems to alleviate that, talk to your AICA Orthopedics spine specialist about the next steps to your treatment. Minimally invasive spine surgery could be a viable option to eliminate back pain and experience relief.

Minimally Invasive Techniques

Minimally invasive techniques can provide relief from back pain from several different types of conditions. Lumbar decompression to remove pressure placed on spinal nerves by bones or herniated discs, discs that have slipped out of place. Spinal fusion can also be performed through minimally invasive techniques. Spinal fusion surgery fuses together painful vertebrae to provide stability and alleviate chronic back pain.

The Process of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimally invasive spine surgery begins by your spine surgeon making a small incision in the back near the problem area of the spine. For herniated disc surgery, a retractor is then inserted into the incision and a piece of bone is removed to allow access to the spinal nerves and herniated disc. The disc is then removed and pressure to the spinal nerves alleviated. Spinal fusion is done in much the same way. Two small incisions are made on the side of the spine and retractors are inserted to remove the lamina and the disc out of the way so screws and rods can be inserted for spinal support. Spinal fusions are commonly performed from the side to avoid muscle or nerve injury. Bone grafts can be placed into the spinal disc space to promote optimal healing.
